Verges is my mother's maiden name. Her family came to the United States from Maunabo, Puerto Rico just before the Spanish American War. They lived in the suburbs of Boston and eventually lost ties to Puerto Rico. My grandfather Eugene Marcelin Verges II traced the family name to France. His father, also Eugene, came to Puerto Rico from southern Spain in the 1840s. The family established a prosperous trading business, Hermanos Verges, and later acquired many sugar properties in Arroyo, Maunabo, and Guayama. He married my great-grandmother, Carolina Riefkohl, who was 30+ years younger, when she was 16. The main family properties were Hacienda Bordelaise and the Central Columbia. Related families include the Alcaides, Riefkohls and Clauzels. If anyone would like to exchange information, I have many of the business records of the family.
I am a history teacher in San Diego and I have two older siblings, Debbie and Eugene who live in Boston.
